Does anyone know of a good herbivorous lizard for a pet? It needs to be strictly herbivorous, as in it can't even eat crickets. Thanks!

actually, herbivorous isn't the right word, i don't care if it eats meat, as long as the meat isn't live.

Green iguanas are VERY hard to care for. I would not recomend them at all. We have 4 rescues.

I have recently answered this question. There are green iguanas, uromastyx, blue tongue skinks, and crested geckos which do not need live food ever.

Blue tongues are actually omniverous, so they do need some meat. I feed mine cooked low fat chicken. Some people feed organic cat or dog food, but these have a lot of preservatives which aren't too good.

And just a correction, crested geckos aren't herbivorous totally, but they can eat formulated diet blends which contain their protien needs. Some diets do not and you'd still need crickets, so you must be sure the correct diet is used.

Uromastyx are completely herbivorous. They are usually pretty friendly if they are socialized when young. I have one and she is a sweet heart. She eats strictly veggies (broccoli, spinach, squash, peas, carrots, etc) The funny thing is that you dont need to offer water to these guys, they absorb it through their veggies. The only catch is that these guys need to be kept very, very warm (basking area of 110 degrees or so). So if you can supply heat lamps and heating pads to keep them warm, then you are doing good.

Your best bet is uromastyx. They need a fresh salad daily, based on dark leafy greens. They need high temps--120F to 130F. They can be shy as babies, but are usually sweet. Read more here:

Iguana's of course. If fed a wide enough variety of fruits and veggies they never require any type of meat. Supplement from time to time but thats it. I know people that feed theirs meat but it is not required.
