It is his title bequeathed to him by the Queen. He is a Prince of Great Britian and Ireland however his title is Prince of Wales. This title historically, has been given by the monarch to the heir to the throne. Thus, when Charles is King, he will most likely make William Prince of Wales.

The Prince of Wales has traditionally been the title of the Heir apparent of the English (and later British) throne since the time of Edward I. In 1301 he gave his eldest son (later Edward II) the title "Prince of Wales". Wales is a principality and Edward I conquered Wales and executed the last remaining native "prince" in 1282.

The Queen is Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This includes 4 territories/countries: Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

Prince Philip is not King, the UK hasn't had a King since 1952 when the Queen ascended the throne. Charles is a Prince of the United Kingdom not just England.

The Prince of Wales is the title that the heir apparent to the throne of the UK wears. Charles is a prince of England and the United Kingdom by birth, as are his brothers. And incidentally,Charles' parent are Queen Elizabeth II and Philip,Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince Consort. Elizabeth is monarch and her husband is a prince consort;there can be no kings in the UK as long as there is a Queen Regent.

Becasue as Wales is a sub state/country thingy it makes since to have the heir to the throne carry that title. Being a prince or princess of wales has been part of royal tradition for ages. It is the heir to the crown. Usually being made Prince or Princess of england means you are sister or eice or something to the King/Queen.

England and Wales, are just two parts of a mega-country called the UK. Queen Elizabeth isn't just the queen of England, but Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and many overseas territories. Prince of Wales is an old title that started back centuries ago due to a bitter battle and Queen Elizabeth II decided to crown her eldest son (back at the age of 19) as Prince of Wales. It's expected that upon Charles' ascension to the throne, William will be the new Prince of Wales.

There isn't a title for "Prince of England." Historically, the first born son to a monarch was always given the title "Prince of Wales. I assume the reason behind this is because when the Prince does become a monarch, he will be titled as "King of England."

However, the title "Princess of Wales" does not refer to the first born daughter of a monarch, but only a courtsey title for the wife of "Prince of Wales. Daughters born to a monarch are given the title "Princess of England."

Charles's parents are not king and queen, his father is only a prince because he is a foreign immigrant with no direct line of succession to the throne.
The title Prince of Wales is completely meaningless being just a ceromonial title to enhance the importance of the heir to the throne.
Charles has no connection with Wales and does not even live there, but he does take money from his estates there.

Prince Charles is the son of the now Queen Elizabeth II, his father Prince Phillip is not a King. The title of Prince of Wales is very old. It would take too long to go through the rest of the history, but maybe now you have a better idea.

"Prince of Wales" is a courtesy title, usually given to the heir to the throne. It doesn't imply any more authority or stature in Wales than in any other part of the U.K. He is also Prince of the United Kingdom, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Chester, Earl of Carrick, and Baron of Renfrew - "Prince of Wales" is just one of many titles he holds, but as the highest distinct one it is the one he uses to identify himself.
