Carbon is a nonmetal, and therefor is brittle and solid. It is nonmalleable, meaning that it cannot be pounded into a different shape. It is black and a poor conducter of electricity. It exists in nature as a monoatomic element.

It pretty much coinsides with description of charcoal or graphite. Black brittle solid.
