"Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.
Why the Politically Correct Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a 'Holiday'.
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor, just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod ,
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken and Fonda.
But as Target was hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of Salvation and Grace.
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The Reason for the Season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate 'Winter Break' under your 'Holiday Tree'
While sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Shout 'MERRY CHRISTMAS', not Happy Holiday,
Our Country was founded under the Christian way
And to those who don't like it, we'll just have to say,
Take your hate elsewhere, you don't have to stay!!"
this sums up xmas/christmas nowadays

Long time ago I had a manager that was a minister (had a shady rep, but besides the point). He and others would go to prisons and talk with prisoners and "exercise" demons among other things.
Anyway I was number one the company in six states and remember writing Xmas. He mentioned it to me and explained it did offend him. Looked at it and really figured that it was being lazy. This fellow and I did not agree on much and he knew to leave me alone as i had run him off many moons before for messing with my clients and the owner knew this, but on this I agreed.
So yes i felt it was lazy and disrespectful. So I always took my time in the future and glad I did. It is stupid and lazy and it you enjoy the season and reason, then you should do this.
I have never seen it again for over 20 years until tonight. Merry Christmas. Take care.

No I only evaluate the source and why somebody would not take the extra few seconds to place in writing Christ and surely it relatively is Christ-mass. Merry Christ-mass and chuffed New 365 days! remember what you enable your self to think of, see, hear, say and do actually set into action God’s resourceful powers that variety the matrix of existence’s reality you finally end up now strolling, whether good or undesirable, so be circumspect, putting your ideas, eyes, ears and tongue on what's nice, effective and helpful. Yes, if people care about the religious significance of Christmas then xmas is offensive.
If people are hostile to the religious significance of Christmas, then they would prefer you say Seasons Greetings or Happy Holidays instead.
So either way, xmas is a lazy word, best avoided.

As others have said, it takes the "Christ" out of Christmas. I prefer Christmas, not xmas.

no, because it is the same thing. The X symbol is not a letter but the ancient Greek symbol for Jesus, the Christ. That was actually the way they wrote about him, using the X. When you write Xmas, you are literally writting Christ mas, which we write as Christmas. It is the same thing, just in another language.

No. not really, but can understand why because it's a commercial name for the season not the the given which is in memory to Christ.

It doesn't me, but it does some people. To each his own, I guess. I just consider the "X" to stand for "Christ" and so how could I be offended? I think to some it is an offensive abbreviation because they don't realize it is derived from the Greek letter "Chi" for "C", they think it means Christ is being "X'ed" out of Christmas.

Its just bad grammar and laziness really. It should be Christmas because of the religious holiday that we are meant to be celebrating. Even though no one seems to think about it like that anymore.

I don't know who gave starfire the thumbs down, but she is correct. Χριστος (Greek for "Christ") was frequently abbreviated to X or XP and can be seen in many Eastern orthodox churches.
X mas and XP mas means the festival of Christ. So, before you give someone a thumb down, make sure you know your history. It is negative attitude like that which turns non-Christians off of the "church".
