Yeah he is great. But if you're a serious player, what he does is not that difficult. I've played in bands for years, and I know players that laugh at him, and can play his stuff with their eyes closed. He's kind of a joke amongst many classical/jazz/rock/metal players that I know. I own a few of his albums, and DVD concerts and he's very enjoyable to watch. But after you see him ripping the same scales over and over, and doing his famous 'throw the guitar around his body' trick a thousand times, his act can get stale very quickly. When I first heard Yngwie, he was playing with the Swedish band 'Alcatrazz' and the L.A band 'Steeler'. I was sort of impressed by them. Then when he went solo and released his 1st album 'Rising Force' I was duly impressed, also by the fact 'Jethro Tull' drummer Barriemore Barlow also played on that album. He has a few unique trademarks, one being the fact that he scallops his fretboard's by hand (or at least he used to). I don't mean to shoot him down or anything, because he's good, but so are thousands of other players. Chief CNN correspondent 'John Roberts' (being groomed to be the next Dan Rather) is from Canada, (surprised?) and back in the late 70's early 80's he hosted a music show called 'The New Music' out of Toronto. He was known simply as 'J.D. Roberts' back then. I worked with J.D. at 'City-TV', for three years, and had the pleasure, or should I say displeasure of talking with Yngwie before and after his interview with J.D. Yngwie was a total ***hole, and so hung up on himself. Back then he was unique, and people, both fans and players alike were really amazed by him. I think this went to young Mr. Malmsteens head, and I guess a certain degree of ********* can be expected by a young dude on the verge of stardom. But he was just plain rude to everyone on the set that day, and I lost all respect for him as a person anyways. But as a player, he still great! Repetitive, but great nonetheless! I guess I can't use John Roberts in any of my trivia questions now, can I??

Icarus Dream Suite is pretty amazing. I play blues-rock, so I don't listen to Yngwie all the time, but he pretty much "owns" the neo-classical metal category. A lot of people don't like him because they think he has an "attitude", but I just think he's just himself, and might be a little bit jealous of his talent - I usually hear this ONLY from guitar players that don't like him, and not just "people off the street".

I have to be honest: no. Too much showboating, too much ego. I'm not a fan of any of these million miles an hour, modal chords you need nine fingers to play pickers. No soul, all technique. Give me Page or Clapton anyday, eye thank yew.

I can't help but think he's kindofa douche, especially after seeing him on the pantera home video. I guess he hates donuts or something, but the whole exchange was f*ckin hilarious.
