Depends on the person to whom you're speaking. Some people prefer being called Black, while others prefer African American.
Neither are derogatory (although some people feel uncomfortable calling Black people Black in this day and age because society has come up with something it feels is better - "African American").

Black is easier to say...Whenever a white person says African American I assume they have no black friends.

Most African Americans don't mind being called black. Most of us call each other black anyway.

I would say "black". Many did not come from Africa. Most of my black friends prefer "black" to African American.
