You can use a non-HD TIVO with an HDTV; all the HDTVs I know of have analog inputs in addition to digital ones

Whether you will be happy with the results is another matter. How big of a screen are you talking about? On a 26" it would probably look OK, with a 55" screen, eh, not so good.

Until 1/2/08 TIVO is offering lifetime service for $399 for people upgrading from series 2 to TIVO HD.

Series 2 TIVOs with lifetime service seem to be selling for about $300 on ebay.

You do not have to buy a new Tivo. The Tivo Series2 (non-HD) will work fine with an HDTV. You will only be able to record analog TV stations though (1-70). You will not be able to record digital cable stations, including HD stations.

If you want to record digital cable stations and HD stations, then you need to buy the Tivo Series3 HD DVR. Buy 2 CableCards from your cable company and you are all set.
