How about describing the historical contexts of the two lives of Edmund Dantes? In the first, he is wrongly accused of having connived at the escape of Napoleon Bonaparte from Elba.

Why should any one have been excited about that? Who wanted to keep Bonaparte in exile on Elba? Why were persons glad to see him land again in France and march on Paris?

In the second, I have to beg your pardon that I do not remember how many years Edmund Dantes spent in the Chateau D'If. I think that it was 20 years. 1815 + 20 = 1835. So Edmund Dantes would have emerged in Paris in the reign of King Louis Philippe.

So you could discuss the state of France in that year. That could be your book report: The difference between Edmund Dantes that he was, and the man that he became. The France that was, and the country that it became.

It's been a while since I read it, but maybe you could do something on the struggle between right and wrong... or do a feminist analysis... or write about the corruption of government... I dunno.
