i haven't had my beardies for long so i'm not very experienced, but i've done some reading and the author of a book i got on dragons says he uses calcium sand as a substrate and hasn't had problems. my dad tells me he's read that you need to wash the sand before putting it into the terrarium, but i can't find anywhere that says that on the bag of sand or in the book i have. do i need to wash the sand? and if i do, how would i do that?

thanks to the two people who answered so far...
i told my dad what you've said as well as what i've read saying not to use calcium sand or any loose substrates, but being as hard-headed as he is, he insists that calcisand is fine cause the book says it is. i can't get through to him that it's good NOT to use loose substrates. any help?
also... the owner of the shop where we got the dragons believes the girl is gravid. could someone tell me what i should do for her until she lays the eggs, like what sort of substrate should she be on and what to feed her, etc., and what to do with the eggs after- like would building an incubator be alright or should i buy one, things like that?

well even though some ppl use sand as it is asetically pleasing it does not mean it is safe at all for use in a beadie environment. sand can easily get taken up when the lizard gulp down crickets around its enclosure and can get impacted before you can say but! avoid using sand at all costs no matter what the petstore or manufacturere says. use tile, reptile carpet, newpaper, or paper towel instead and u will keep ur beardie ahppy and healthy. if u need any more info i will help u as much as i possibly can feel free ot contact me any time

Do NOT use calcium sand--it is the worst product on the market today, and responsible for many reptile deaths. They ingest it while eating, and get fatal intestinal impactions. Use NON-adhesive shelf liner, reptile carpet, ceramic tile cut to fit, or paper toweling instead. NO loose substrate of any kind!!
