The base of an isosceles triangle is 8 in. less than the length of the equal sides. If the perimeter of the triangle is 28 in., find the length of each of the sides.

28 = (a-8) + a + a
28 = a - 8 + a + a
28 + 8 = a + a + a
36 = 3a
36/3 = a
12 = a

Therefore the sides are both 12inches and the base is (12-8) 4inches long.

OK. Let x = length of 2 equal sides.
Perimeter = x+x+ x-8 = 28
3x-8 = 28
3x = 28+8
3x = 36.
x = 36/3 = 12.

So the 2 equal sides are each 12"
The base is 12"- 8" = 4"
