Wild Turkeys are capable of flying. They roost in Oak Trees. It is the domesticated Turkey that doesn't fly. It doesn't have the need to escape predators and therefore has lost the ability.

Domesticated / farm grown turkeys, the ‘couch potatoes’ of turkeys, are too fat and weak to fly.

Wild turkeys, however, can run up to speeds of 20 MPH and fly for short distances at over 50 MPH.

Same reason some politicians have brains but don't think (sorry, I couldn't resist that--reading too much of our local papers). Seriously, wildlive has it right. Domesticated turkeys are bred to have large breasts, and therefore they are too heavy, and because of being domesticated, too lazy to fly. At least that's what a farmer told me.

Is a turkey a bird? lots of birds have wings but dont fly. Imagine it used to be a dinosaur and is evolving.
