Because students have been caught engaging in activities they should not. Using cell phones to cheat is not uncommon. Also, cell phones with cameras are often used to invade other people's privacy.
Minors do NOT have the same Constitutional rights as adults. This is especially true in a public institution such as school.
It may be an invasion of privacy, but it is completely legal and proper in a school environment.

woh! she can sue the school for invasion of privacy! we have constitutional rights, and your school just overlooked one! unless the principal had probable cause (such as priors, possible cheating, etc.) and there was a member of the law enforcement present, or if he had a search warrant, what the guy did is illegal and punishable by the law . no matter if the kid is a minor. also, what the principal did is also slightly freaky, because he looked into a females cell phone. uhhh...do i need to clarify any further...?
if she got into trouble for what was on the phone, her parents should go to the school board and confront them on the problem, making it known that unless the principal apologizes and their daughter is not punished, they will be contacted by an attorney.
but your friend should not have been texting. the school could use this as an excuse.

because when you go to the school, you sign a paper that basically states that the school has the right to go through your stuff (my school has one of these). and you're right. she shouldn't have been texting in the first place.

um...they don't. Anytime a teacher asks me for my phone, I never give it. I don't care if they write me up. They didn't pay for it, and it's really creepy for a principal to be looking through a chicks phone. I would be super pissed.
