Multiply nos. in brackets by the one outside it.

4 * 1/4= 1
4 * x= 4x

4x+1= 5
4x=5-1
4x=4
Divide both sides by 4 to get rid of the number in front of x
x=1

So, the first step to solving this is the distributive property.

4 (1/4 + x) =5.
4 * 1/4 + 4 * x =5.
1 + 4x =5

You then subtract one from both sides, leaving you with...

1 + 4x =5.
-1 -1

4x = 4

Once you do that, all that's left is to divide both sides by 4.

4x =4.
/4 /4

1x (or x) =4

x =4
