I was driving out of my apt. complex when my brake light came on. It was not my ABS brake light. This one just said BRAKE. I was able to drive back to my complex without any problems and my brakes seemed fine. Is the problem with my emergency brakes or the entire brake system. I haven't driven the car since, but the car is my life. Does this sound serious?

Check your brake fluid. Most cars use that light as a parking brake warning and also as a low fluid warning. If the fluid is low it may be due to wear on the brake pads. Disk brakes, as they wear move the caliper ever closer to the rotor to maintain the same distance of travel when the brake is applied. Doing this causes the fluid from the reservoir to be now in the calipers and lines. Low fluid may mean it's close to time to replace the brake pads.

Normally, it has to do with the whole brake system. Open the hood and check the reservoir. It will be located on the drivers side firewall attached to a large round thing called the power brake booster. Open the cap of the reservoir and check the level of the fluid. There should be some kind of way to see if it is low. Fill it up if needed. Most cars take DOT 3 fluid but check the manual or the cap, it should tell you if you are not sure. If it is low, you most likely have a leak somewhere in the system. Get the car to a reputable repair shop ASAP and get it fixed. You don't want to be a statistic or on the news. Good luck. :o)
