Colleges look for improvments over time. Start doing better and they will take notice and you won't lose any brownie points because your one semester of slacking. Don't be taht pressured already - remweber there are Community Colleges. No matter what anyone says, they are cheaper and more focused on students. I do not regret going to a CC whatsoever. You are pretty much promised acceptance on graduating highschool. If for whatever reasony you still want to go to a University your first year, I was accepted at 3, 2 state schools, and Embry-Riddle with a 2.3 GPA. I hardly passed HS, but I got decent SAT scores and had good app package. After all that I decided on a community college and just transfered to a state school with 60 credits and no lost time. I saved lots of money too!
[EDIT] I can't spell.. or write gud.. whoops.. hehe

It is very early in the high school experience for you, so there is still time to improve. However, I have to wonder about a few things. First of all, this was your first semester, and you got a 2.0. Yet you say that you are a 3.5 student - that doesn't make sense, unless you mean that you had a 3.5 in elementary school or middle school, which are quite different from high school. You should probably get some help immediately to help you make the adjustment, or your 2.0 might become your new standard.
Secondly, some colleges will look at your freshman grades, while others will not. Certainly, if you improve dramatically after this, it will have less of an impact, but there might be some residual consequences. Some colleges that might have taken you if you had a 3.5 overall might not look at you if your final cumulative GPA is only 3.2 or 3.3.
Finally, scholarships are pretty rare. Only about 2% of students are in college on scholarships. Most of those who get scholarships have GPAs around a 4.0, and you probably wouldn't be eligible unless you had far more than a 3.5, unless you are a student-athlete and are talking about an athletic scholarship.

The school i'm at right now (mcgill university) didn't even look at freshman grades.
The grades that influence colleges the most are junior and the first semester of senior year. So messing up a little during the first semester won't be too bad.
Also, colleges love to see improvements in grades over time. So you sorta just set yourself up for that. Colleges hate when they see straight A's freshman year go to straight C's junior year.
Hope that helped.

It really depends. was there a reason that it dropped to 2.0? if so you could tell the collages the reason and they might be accepting. But for the rest of the semesters why don't you try and get better than a 3.5 average. I don't think you've messed, i think you can fix this.

No worries, kiddo. It's only your first semester of high school. You have the rest of high school to improve your grades. You may also have an interesting story to tell in your personal statement about what you might be experiencing currently in your life. Your life can't be messed up over 1 semester of grades--chill! =)

At this stage it is difficult to tell. However, colleges look very closely at improvement, and realize that the first semester of high school is often very difficuilt for many students. You have time to improve your grades and show that you can overcome a bad start. Best of luck.

No, colleges aren't going to hold that semester against you mainly because they are only going to look at your overall GPA when you graduate, your overall placement in the class and your entrance exam scores.
