Dehydration probably isn't the most common cause of death in a desert anyway.
Exposure (it can get very cold in a desert at night) and falls from heights get many people. Even a slip down a moderate slope with loose rocks can be a fatal mistake. Heat stroke is a serious danger, too, and easily made much worse by dehydration. There are also a number of venomous animals and poisonous plants in most deserts. Severe sunburn can be a serious health risk, and infections from improper hygene or slight injuries cold lead to a long, slow death. Starvation isn't unlikely for someone unfamiliar with how to find food in a desert... most things that live there are either very fast or poke holes in you.
A few deserts still have large animals quite willing to make a meal of a person.

Ways to die in the sun OR in the desert?
In the sun-
dehydration, sunstroke, inhalation of sand/burial/injury(during an intense sandstorm) delirium (chasing mirages, walking in cicles) sun blindness (in itself it kill you but could lead to injury/death) exhaustion, starvation
At night-
exposure/hyperthermia (the desert is known for temperature extremes-it can get EXTREMELY cold)
Desert-related dangers-
One must remember a desert is more than just a sandy, hot location (think Death Valley or Sahara). A desert is defined as any arid (dry) area of land with meager rainfall that supports only sparse vegetation and a limited population of people and animals. Five basic types of these are mountainous (High Altitude), rocky plateau, sand dunes, salt marshes and broken, dissected terrain. Each type has unique challenges and dangers and they all share some dangers, such as
injury, drowning (flash-flood) lightening strike (unusual but possible-little shelter)poisonous insect/animal bite (type depends on where you are) mineral poisoning, ingestion of poisonous plants, animal attack, human attack.
