The plot of the movie had something to do with a young man, working in a circus, who falls in love with a young girl; the young man had the ability to eat glass and metal. The person who ran the circus didn't like the idea of one of the circus' acts, fornicating with an outsider, and demanded that the boy abandon the relationship. Instead, he runs away with the girl. Unfortunately, the one in charge of the circus, mystically follows the boy, and while he was making love with his girlfriend, causes all the glass and metal to come out from inside his body, which rips him to shreds...

...actually, this DOES strike a most familiar cord, but I think that you're thinking of a horror anthology film, rather than a single feature film; you might want to check out the 1987 multi-horror-story-film, "From a Whisper to a Scream", which was released in theaters under the title, "The Offspring". Veteran actor Vincent Price had one of his final performances, in the film's wrap-around segments, and one of the mini-stories in the film, bears more than a passing resemblance to your description...
