The problem is generating enough energy to burn through the wood. The laser pointers you can buy do not generate enough energy to burn wood. Powerful lasers are much more expensive. Industry uses laser cutting and laser welding equipment for burning through and melting metals. Any laser the generates enough energy to burn wood would certainly be dangerous to your eyes or your skin. If you do build your own laser, be sure to become an expert on laser safety. Among other things, you need to be careful to prevent reflecting the laser beam to places you don't want it.

good luck

Not practical. Since the wood will be burning too, it will not cut cleanly. If you really want to cut with "fire", try a propane torch with a only a pin hole for the flame to escape. It's as accurate as your wood burning laser. You'll need to experiment with oxygen flow, ventilation in the nozzle, and etc.. so the flame keeps going.
