Mention the Mull of Kintyre to middle-aged folk and Paul McCartney and Wings' 1977 hit song will be playing in their head the rest of the day.

Mention the Mull to long-time members of the British Board of Film Classification and they may well blush – or snigger.

The Mull of Kintyre test was reputedly the board's unofficial guideline to decide whether the image of a character's penis could be shown.

The board wouldn't okay a movie or video for general release if it depicted a phallus erect to the point that the angle it made from the vertical was greater than that of the Mull of Kintyre, Argyll and Bute, on maps of Scotland.

The guideline was allegedly adopted by the film classification board in 1992 and subsequently by U.K. television broadcasters and some print publishers.

But time marches on ...

By 2002 the restriction was lifted and the U.K. seems to have accepted the depiction of greater tilts in kilts without undue fuss.
