In the context of what is referred to as THE Holocaust it began when the first undesirables were murdered in Germany.Hitler became Chancellor in `33 and the first Concentration Camp was opened at Dachau a short time later that year ,to be followed by Sachsenhausen (`36) ,Buchenwald (`37) ,Flossenburg and Mauthausen (`38) and then Ravensbruck (`39) however these were Forced Labour Camps.
The first of the Death Camps was opened in 1942 and included Belzec ,Sobibor ,Treblinka and perhaps the most infamous Aushwitz-Birkenau.Of course there were other camps in operation during WW2 such as Majdanek.
The infamous Wannsee Conference was held just outside Berlin in 1942 to discuss "The Jewish Problem" so you could say THE HOLOCAUST began then.

The holocaust started in 1933 after Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. If you wish to gather more in depth information on the holocaust I have found the following website to be very interesting:
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum www.ushmm.org
Or if you live in or near Los Angeles or New York, you could visit The Simon Wisenthal Museum of Tolerance and see exhibitions on the holocaust.
Good luck in your studies.

It began in 1933, almost immediately after Hitler came into power.
