She's giving you a stupid solution for a simple problem. If this is a large pet shop or if the girl is young, try talking to someone who seems a little more "with it", if you dig. What she is talking about is the inevitable ammonia spike that will occur within a week of first stocking a tank. Unless your tank is tiny, it should be fine with only 3 tiny fish, and they probably will survive the spike, provided you make sure you condition the water to relieve stress, keep the temp level, and don't overfeed (it adds to the ammonia). Once your filter grows all of the beneficial bacteria that you need, you can then return to the store and gradually add fish to build up your tank. Always add less than 1 inch of fish per gallon (expected adult size) because there's more room for chemical error and the fish will always be healthier when they are less crowded! Again, once the nitrifying bacteria arrive, things will even out and the ammonia will begin to drop back down. The fish won't necessarily drop dead from it if they aren't already sickly. What I prefer to do is cycle the tank with some used filter medium from a cycled and trusted tank (free of disease, etc) You keep the used medium wet and dunk it in with your new filter and leave it a few days to allow it to grow onto the new filter. You also want at least a couple of "throw away" or really hardy little fish in the tank, because their ammonia is what feeds the bacteria and keeps it alive. That lady is a little nuts, but she's also sort of got the right idea. I'm sure if your cat was stuck in a tree, she'd tell you to either build a chainsaw from scratch and then knock the tree over onto a king-size bed, lol. In other words, she was making the solution a little more difficult than it needed to be. ps- when you are starting the tank, keep checking and recording ammonia and other levels, or take it to the pet shop to be tested. Most shops do it for free and some small a really small fee like one dollar. It's worth it, because then you know how fast your tank is ready for new fish without guessing. Remember: ammonia is invisible so be wary! Best of luck with your new fish, and I'd recommend a beginner's book for aquarium hobbyists that has a section on the "biological filter" or "nitrate cycle".

I want a pet penguin named Chaplin who likes to waddle around the house. The only problem is when he will eat my pet fish, and we will have to send him back to Antarctica. But hey, it was fun while it lasted.
