I'm doing a report on the physical treatment of slaves in the United States and Brazil. It is a comparison of the punishment methods, living quality, and other comparable things between the two nations. Does anyone have any good sources on the subject for either country or both? I was given Carl Deglers book Neither Black Nor White, but that's all. I just need some sources, thanks!

Two important scholarly works on slavery are "The Peculiar Institution" by Kenneth Stampp and "Slavery" by Stanley Elkins. Both were published about half a century ago, and subsequent generations of historians have greatly expanded the study and analysis of slavery. I believe that Elkins offers more comparison than Stampp between slavery in the U.S. and slavery in other countries, but I'm not sure how much attention he gives specifically to Brazil.
