I am willing to pay up front, or give a share whichever you like. Since this will be self published and is my first ever book I don't mind if I get a first time illustrator. Good chance to create something for your portfolio. If your not an illustrator but know of someone or a place I can find one, please feel free to answer. Thanks.
p.s. (I have over ten years experience working with children and I have a very valid marketing plan)

Good luck on your endeavor. My Aunt did her own children's books (art and text), three of them total, self published as Manzanita Press. They still have a lot of the 1,000 print run but I think they made their cost back. She didn't regret doing it.

Go to a local art college and approach/interview some recent grads. Pick one candidate who's demonstrated capacity to fi=fulfill your requirements. Draw up a contract. Meet with pre-drawing sketches -which you pre-approve before they move forward to do the OFFICIAL project. Pay them a fee for the conceptual sketches as well... Pay them NOT on spec of future book sales but in per illustration or as a lump sum for the 8 page illustration-project. You'll get a good price and the students will be eager to showcase their talent via your project for their portfolios.

Go to Google and type in Fujiwara Art.

Go down to MySpace.com - Artist Fujiwara - ...

and click on it. He's done children's books - don't know how expensive he is.
