I think so. If I just don't agree with something, I remain quiet and don't keep the conversation going. I don't make waves but don't participate. If the conversation is going on and on, I insert "I don't mean to change the subject , but"....when actually I do mean to change the subject.
Kindness is the best policy in any event. So, if they persist in talking about the subject and they are giving you advice, I say "thank you for sharing that.." or "thank you for caring." and then I change the subject quickly.
Good luck

My friends and family tell me that I'm NOT GOOD at it at all. They say that they think I have ADD since we'll be talking about, I don't know, raking the back yard. And when I've had enough of it, I'll say something like "Hey! Did you guys know we had chocolate pudding? I could make whipped cream!". I don't use a transitional phrase or anything. It just pops out and the subject change is so fast, everyone gets mental whiplash.

People love to talk about themselves and get flattered. Change the subject by throwing a compliment out at them. Example:"What do you use on your skin? It is so smooth and healthy!"

Yes, it can get quite annoying when the person is trying to stay clinging on to the subject though.

Sometimes. I answer a question with a question if I want to avoid something. Learned that from a good friend of mine who has a knack of doing it.
