There's so much hate between these two groups of fans on Yahoo! Answers, as well as in real life. I listen to both genres, and they're both just different forms of musical expression.

Run-DMC (rappers) and Aerosmith (rockers) united for "Walk This Way"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8A0rhVG91U

Public Enemy and Anthrax came together for "Bring The Noise"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoLkaGcpJFA

Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon of the Sex Pistols connected for "World Destruction"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93HWraYnSFc

Beastie Boys took the mics and Kerry King of Slayer took the guitar for "Fight For Your Right"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NdAUnnU9Ac

Here's some quotes from both rockers and rappers:

"These two kinds of music have always been similar in attitude; I never understood why there wasn't more of a crossover" - Scott Ian of Anthrax

"Heavy metal and rap are both defiant forms of music" - Chuck D of Public Enemy

"Rock-and-roll's not dead - it's just gotta open its doors and realize where it came from. I'm trying to get rap kids to realize that it's all rock-and-roll. When rock-and-roll first started, it was black and white kids together - I'm trying to get it back together" - Ice-T

"I loved the power of metal guitar, but so many times, it was too stiff. I also loved rap music like Public Enemy, when it was high powered and almost seemed like metal with this insane wall of sound. That was my main inspiration, loving Public Enemy and Slayer at the same time but not wanting to sound like either of them" - Rob Zombie

There should be more unity among these two genres

To Thekunt2: I asked this question in both the Rap and Hip-Hop section and the Rock and Pop section. This question applies to fans of both sections

To Hillary L: That's exactly the type of ignorance I'm talking about

To Eric: Rap is based on the rhyming, the rhythm, the flow of words. Listen to some Tupac, and read some of his poetry, it's great stuff

I don't know why either...
I listen to all kinds of rock, and one of my best friends listens to hip hop, and that doesn't stop us from being friends... I have to admit I dislike hip hop, but I don't hate it because it's still music, and a real music lover likes anything with a beat I guess...

I think that hip hop and rock are against each other because of racism, because most hip hop 'singers' are black, and most rockers are white, with some exceptions, like Eminem, and the black rocker guy whose name I don't know

Ohh and the reason why I dislike hip hop is because I think they have no talent, because most of their songs are just talk-like, no singing at all... I do know that some rock songs are all screaming and that makes no sense, but most rock songs have beautiful meaning no matter what the instrumental, and the singers can sing (I don't know if hip hop songs have meaning because I have never listened to them, because they don't sing at all)

I get along fine with hip-hop fans/performers. As an avid vinyl collector, I also supply several local DJ's with records to spin, and take pleasure in introducing them to breaks that they may have never heard before.
Whenever I go to their shows, I'm probably the only person in that crowd that can tell you the origin of every single break played. I'm probably the oldest guy in the crowd also!
The only negative thing I'd have too say about hip-hop is just when I start to get into a cool break that I know and love, it's over and on to the next. Sometimes I'd like to hear more than a 20 second snippet. Oh well!
I partied with Kool Herc awhile back, and loaned him several LP's for one of his shows. For those of you who don't know, Kool Herc is THE founding Father of the hip-hop genre. He was the first person to ever spin two tables simultaneously, and he was doing this as far back as the early 70's.
Those who know me within this section, are aware that I'm a rocker all the way! But I can appreciate all forms of music as well.

"Rockers" just find the hip-hop'in kids immautre, in my skool they ask "you like Rock music?" and we just look at them like thery're the stupidest kids ever. There's different genre's in rock therefore with that question we just find them ignorant. It's not that hip hop is hated by these "rockers" it's that the mainstream hip hop is vial and unapropriate. "Pimps and hoes" aren't good subjects to look up on. Neither is depression, but if you look into lyrics of rock music they aren't trying to get depressed there is so much more to the song.

Mainstream is the problem not genres of music. Rock is now a form of skill level. Take bands like Linkin Park. They suck so much, but their lyrics are meaningful.
In Hip-Hop SPM is annoying. Bands have their talent drums, singing, guitar, and bass. In Hip-Hop they just spit out words that are so unorthodoxed.

In bands where they have a soulful singer they achieve more talent. Take Anthony Green for example his voice is angelic, and there have been bands that "rap" like The Red Hot Chili Peppers their skill level is way better than Linkin Park.

Also in many places hip hop is taken as an example, a bad one.

I don't get the pants falling off your *** trend. Serisouly it's inappropriate and stupid.

i'd think that it's because rap music nowadays signify things different from rock and roll.
if you looked at all the songs you mentioned. those are old groups (for all except Afrika, i dont know them, but i do know the Sex pistols). Old school hip-hop is different from modern-day rap, now theres some good songs, but for the most part, all they do is glorify sex, cars, money--pretty much the materialistic lifestyle.
I really dont even know what rock music is about now, but i sure as hell know they dont rock out and sing about their escalades and the 5 fine "hos" they managed to bag while throwing money out the windows.
Before, rap and rock sang about similar things, they did have a similar attitude, but now, things are different, and this is seen by the fans, which is why they dont really get along.

besides, when they do get along, you get **** like korn and disturbed, and god knows what, "nu metal", please.

I do like some rap. Although, a lot of rap/hip hop seriously gives me a headache...and I don't get a headache to Death Metal. Weird, I know. But I guess most people would rather fit into a certain group than be well rounded.

there is this image that everyone has in their head about the fans of each genre. its stereotypes that are hard to ignore.

for example i didn;t like mcr because i though of their fans...and i assume that they are young teens that have no idea what good music is.

i am a mostly an alternative rock fan but there is so much rap music that i also like. one problem that i have and always will have is that i hate the fans that hip hop have. i just always think of them as fans that have no appreciation of good quality and all they do is find a song with a good beat and automatically that song is genius/

Personally, I'm a big fan of both. The problem is that mindless idiots like Soulja Boy release their horrible music to the world. i like rap that - oh i dont know.......rhymes, has a beat, has a meaning behind it. Chamillionaire, Eminem, and Kanye West are the best modern rappers by far.

i admire the two. What human beings certainly do not understand is that rap is a sub-form of rock n' roll, the unique rock n' roll of the 40s. steel, inventive, Grunge, Rap, all of those issues progressed from that rock n' roll and split off into it somewhat is own subgenres.

I know what you mean about the two different types of fans hating each other. I used to be a rap fan a long time ago to but not anymore at all. Now I'm just a hardcore metal fan.

I am a fan of both rock(metal, punk, hardcore punk, emotional hardcore punk, psychedelic rock, hard rock, grunge etc.) and rap(alternative, 80's-90, underground; anything lyrical); I know the in and outs of each genre.
Also, the radio plays the worst of rap like Soulja Boy and Jibbs. Thats a reason why rock fans hate them. Most kids who listen to rap listen to the crappy side of it.

I never understood it either, alot of it stems from ignorance I guess. Some rock kids think rap is all about sex, violence and drugs, some rap kids think rock is all about suicide and screaming. There shouldn't be so much hate between any type of music really. It's just music, it's a form of self expression.

EDIT:
*sigh* Ignore Hilary L.....
