If they download a file to you or transfer a file via MSN, or Yahoo Messenger, you will know for sure if your pc becomes infected. Then use your antivirus/spyware. If you have a really good backgroud scanner that works 100%., will kill the file before it's hits your system.
You email service, depending on what service you use, should have an online scanner to scan attachments before you open them.

Viruses are generally transmitted via attachments. There is a new virus out that can be sent to you from people on your contacts list with the attachment "INVITATION" if you get one of these emails do not open attachment - delete it immediately. It is very dangerous and will wipe out your hard drive. Your contacts may not have even sent the email.

downlaod these and update them
Spyware Blaster(immunizer)
AVG Spy free
A2 Free (wont conflict)
Spybot
update them and run two and scan then quarantine what you find, restart and scan with other
