He is wary of revealing his identity until he knows he is among friends. Instead, he introduces himself only as a shipwrecked unfortunate. The ultimate example of this is his homecoming to Ithaca, where he disguises himself as a beggar until he is ready to deal with the suitors in his house.

The one time he forgot himself and boasted of his exploits to the Cyclops he had blinded, The Cyclops, Polyphemos, prayed to his father Poseidon to curse Odysseus.
