In my observations, if you are good at reading and writing, pretty much every other academic subject comes easy to you. You have to read and write in every discipline.
Most professional jobs require you to write at some point, even if only e-mails, memos, etc. Lacking good writing skills gives people the impression that you are uneducated.

Reading and writing are two parts of a greater skill called Communication. The fact that we can do both of these sets us apart from the majority of creatures on this planet. The better you can communicate, no matter what career you choose, the greater your ability to succeed in life. People will judge your worth/intelligence, as well, by how well you communicate. Hence, your future success can be determined by your ability to communicate well. You can experiment with this by writing a note clearly and having people read and do what the note says, and writing the same note, but in an ambiguous fashion and seeing how well your communication is received.
Also remember that writing should be geared to your audience. How you might communicate with friends, or on MySpace, or some such blog, is not how you would communicate in a job interview, or in writing your introduction letter, nor is it the way you should communicate with teachers, or doctors.
Reading well and writing well are very important.

Other people know things that you don't, but ought to. You might even know a few things that others don't. Communication is how those ideas move from one person to another, and written words are one of the very useful forms that communication may take. I've learned things from people who have been dead for decades, sometimes even centuries. How did that happen? They wrote down their ideas and later on I read them. Pretty amazing, huh?
How does this relate to your success in life? One way is that it prevents you from having to learn literally everything from trial and error on your own. If you're literate you have the benefit of all of recorded human history to start from. Your foundations are already built for you.

It will help you with grammar and spelling. It will also help you develop your own ideas so you don't have to plagiarize other people's work.
