An attractive woman entered a professional sport generally dominated by men. (I won't mention who because that is irrelevant to the question.) She said she should be judged by her performance in the sport and what she contributes and not by her looks, in other words its not about her body but about her skills and performance. Shortly after this, she anounced that posters of her will be given out to some and sold to others. Many of these posters show her (hardly) dressed in a bikini. Does anyone see a blatant contradiction here and maybe a little hypocrisy? This is not to demean her in any way, but what she says and what she does seem to be self-defeating.

This does seem a little hypocritical, but it's her body and I guess she can use it for profit in any way she wants. On the one hand, she using every PR tool available to her, but on the other, she's drawing attention to the very thing she told everyone else to ignore, maybe that's part of the PR, too. The whole thing is certainly distasteful.

Is she in the sport to prove that attractive women should be taken seriously for their athletic ability rather than their looks? Maybe. But she is going to make a buck by selling hot posters that people will buy because of her athletic ability. She is in it for the money, not to make a political statement.

one could easily argue that, but i'd like to point out that women in sports make considerably less money than their male peers. how is it any different than david beckhams behavior? do we fault him for capitalizing on his sex appeal?

If she had just kept her mouth shut in the first place no one would be bothered.
