It depends on the disease. Ick is a parasite that preys on weakened fish, while fin rot is a bacterial infection that is more prominent in dirty water. There are numerous fungal infections as well as gill flukes. The one thing most of these ailments have in common, though, is that they are MUCH more prevalent in dirty water. Fish waste is broken down into ammonia, nitrite, and then nitrate. All of these compounds are toxic to fish (nitrate is much less toxic though), and these toxins are very stressful. Stressed fish usually have compromised immune systems that are much easier for bacteria, viruses, and fungi to penetrate. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Poor water quality is not a source of disease, it just makes it easier for diseases to occur by stressing fish, making them more vunerable.

well there are many reasons that could cause this. One Your fish could get it from another fish at the breeders place. (the disease would be like a chain reaction) . Another reason could be if you had fish in that tank before and those fish had a fungus or some sort of disease and you didnt wash out the fish tank good enough the new fish could get it. Finally another reason would be from poor water quality.(bad ph, nitrate, nitrite, and or high ammonia levels will do this.
