It's our accent. We were raised to pronounce it "mom" and you were raised to pronounce it "mum". In case you haven't noticed, there's a lot of words we say differently. It always annoys me when I read things written in "english" and there's extra o's and u's added to words. We just have different variations of the same language.

Not really Translational error...I believe it is where you are brought up...altho since I moved to the west coast I have friends that call their Mom, Mum...I was raised in Boston and it was either Mum or Ma, Mummy... didn't matter...we know who she is and kinda sad your taking offence because of someone elses up bringing...says alot tho...have a Great Day :) Merry Christmas...
Oh yeah and being from Bosten We were saying Idea it just sounded like Idear....I'm in my 40s and shared this funny with my Mum not too long ago I always thought when she said Get your Slicker she was saying get your slicka...it was last year I thought about it and I have moved from Boston years ago...It's A slickeR not a sickA...God did I feel like an idiot but was also amused and realized this had to have happened to more than just me...:)

We don't. We pronounce MOM as MOM.
So in your country, you use a different word for an appelation of mother. So do many other countries, like Maman, Mama and Mammy. It doesn't make everyone else wrong, it makes them different.
And if it makes you annoyed, you have way too much time on your hands. Go do something useful like feed the hungry or correct the dictionary.

Because language is not a dead thing but continues to grow and change over time, especially when one becomes part of a multilingual society. I'm sure you know we pronounce it "mommy" rather than "mummy". After all, a mummy is some long-dead thing found in the Egyptian desert. Not exactly a compliment to one's dear mother, is it?

Because every culture/society has a different intonation and pronounciation of words NO matter how annoying it is, its embeded in our accennts! And what happens if I don't like how you pronounce mom as mum, now that doesn't make sense to me! No offense ( really )

I cannot imagine why such a small thing would annoy you. How very odd. They are actually two different words. "Mom" is not derived of " Mum". Some Americans also say
" Mother" and small child say "Mommy". It's all very sweet.

While your pronunciation is quite charming, in America, "mums" are flowers and "mom" is a mother. They are pronounced differently.
