I don't know about anyone else, but I believe it is extremely risky to allow people such as Oprah, who have a particularly powerful influence but whose opinions lack any therapeutic judgement, be endorsing presidential candidates. It could very easily lead to the wrong person being elected. While I do realize that there are other people of influence running other people's campaigns, the fact is that the majority of these other people simply do not have the same power/influence that Oprah has, and if they do they are not black, and generally speaking there are also no instinctive racial assumptions to be had with anyone else. In Obama's case, however, I think that regardless of what she or anyone else says, people instinctively assume that Oprah is endorsing him merely because they have race in common based on a variety of unspoken factors that point the finger in that direction (the fact that she has never endorsed any other candidate, for instance).

with that said, I would like to do what I can to start an online campaign to make sure that Oprah is not allowed to have any influence on the Obama campaign that is based on any of the issues I have just described. I would like basically to get the word out that people cannot allow their opinions of Obama, negative or positive, be influenced by racial assumptions brought on by Oprah, who, despite being a talk show host, her opinion is no more credible than that of any ordinary American. I just don't know how I would even go about starting such a campaign, whether it would even be legal, or how I could get anyone involved, especially since I have no money to work with. Any ideas?

You obviously think the American people are a bunch of dummies that can't make up their own minds? Granted I agree people like Oprah can have a great deal of influence but by the same token when it comes to something as critical as a presidential election folks are going to look beyond the fact that the person is being endorsed by a celebrity or that they are black, or a man or a woman. You have to admit Mr Obama has alot going for him other than just Oprah. May the best man or woman win!

From a legal point of view, unless I'm pretty much mistaken, there's nothing that can stop her from what she's doing. From an ethical point of view, well it would not be RIGHT either to tell her to stop, because as an American citizen, she has a right to campaign for whomever she wants....This does not mean that I don't see your point!!!

What I can suggest is that you as an individual and as an American citizen, exercise your RIGHTS as well, and simply do as much as you can for whichever candidate you think is best suited to run this country. One forum that a lot of people use is this one where you've asked your question.

Also there are dozens of radio shows, hundreds of newspapers and even newsprint magazines you can access through INTERNET (online), and voice your opinion for your candidate, or against the ones you think would be the worst.

Sorry, but Oprah's not the first celebrity to give an endorsement. People aren't going to vote for who she endorses just because she says so.

You're underestimating the American public.

Assuming that she picked Obama just because of race is stupid and racist.

This is America,& everybody is entitled to their own opinion.
, even Oprah. Tell me if she said she was in favor of McCain would you be having so much of a problem with it? Or is the problem you have is that she is a black person that you think has too much as you put it power? Or is your problem that you just don't want to see a black man having the chance to be president?. So do think about these points that I have presented to you. That is the way you are making it sound to me. !

Sure, go ahead.
Start by calling her un-American, that seems to work nowadays. The fringe media will pick up on it and repeat it over and over. People will then stop listening to her, and stop watching her.

When did you first embrace censorship as a democratic philosophy? When you get done silencing the opinion of people with whom you disagree, will it be my turn?
