x² - 2x - 2 = 0 doesn't factor so use the quadratic equation:

x = ( -b +/- sqrt ( b² - 4ac ) ) / 2a
x = ( 2 +/- sqrt ( 4 - 4 ( 1 )( -2 ) ) / 2
x = ( 2 +/- sqrt ( 12 ) ) / 2

here
a = first number which is one because there in no coffiect in front of x
b= 2 because of 2x
c= -2

b squared +or- the square root of 4ac this is all over 2a
so
2(squared) +/- square root of 4(1)(-2)/2(1)
4+/- square root of -8/2
4+/- 2 square root 2/2
4+/-square root of 2 is the answer

cant factorize by brackets, so use the formula -b +/- square root sign b(squared) - 4ac, all over 2a

a= 1
b= -2
c= -2

fill into the equation and use your bemdas rule x]
