I have a neighbor who I KNOW is having a tough time. She's a single mother and her ex isn't interested in helping out. I try to help her as much as I can, but she's very independent and I have to be careful so I don't make her feel like I think she's a charity case. She is so broke that she finally had to go apply for food stamps recently because she lost 17 pounds having to choose between eating and letting her child eat. Of course, she always chose to let her kid have the food and now she looks practically anorexic. I wish she would let me do more for them but she refuses and says I don't 'owe her anything'. That's not how I see it, but oh well...

I am not aware of any I know, but I am sure that if I look a little farther, there are plenty. But your point, though not spoken in your question, is well taken. We do need to do our part to help those we can, even if it is just a donation to a local food bank, or Toys for Tots, or an angel from the Angel Tree. Thanks for the reminder.

My math teacher is giving us the opportunity to buy Christmas presents for a needy family in exchange for extra credit. I think it's an awesome idea.
