I think you would have to be a bit more specific with your question. A router will manage connections to many computers, so it depends what methods you have available to connect the computers to the router.

If the computers are both sited near the router, then you just need to run an ethernet cable from each computer into the lan ports on the back of the router. Standard residential routers normally have 4 ports available.

Alternatively, if you have wireless capability on the computers and a wireless router, you can connect this way or by using a combination of wired and wireless.

Yes you can. (complicated way) - In terms of running two computers, you'll have to get two long enough ethernet cable to connect both computers to the router downstairs. (simplier way) - If you have the router on the downstairs computer just make sure you have wireless cards installed in both computers upstairs so u can get connected to the internet through the router downstairs. The best router from my experience so far is belkin, but linksys and d-link is also good, depending on your budget, buy one of them that suits you. You can get ethernet wireless pci cards at office depot, staples, officemax, radio shack or any other electronic store that sells computer stuff for around $50 and up. Also you can buy a wireless usb stick (prefer ethernet cards though). The ethernet cards as to be installed in the computer, that simple means that you will have to find an available pci slot to stick it in to. While the usb stick can be placed in a usb port on the outside of the computer (make sure installing the drivers first before installing them).
