I'm going to have to go with Edward Norton although the critics don't seem to like him, I can't get past Russel Crowe being more than eye candy.

Tough call. Both bring a high degree of intensity to their role, and Russell does have the Oscar to back up his chops, but I think Edward plays "small" better. Russell is just too wide.
In the end, I have to say that I prefer Ed over Russ, but it could go in either direction
