Weight does affect varicose veins. Losing weight willnot make them go away. Some people have a family tendency for this and as cyberdoc correctly stated, it is to do with valves in the veins which stop working.

Bad diet, lack of sleep, sitting down or standing still for long periods make it worse. Taking regular excercise, regular sleep and eating a balanced diet help the body to repair. If you smoke, give it up as it will make it much worse. If you drink alcohol cut it back.

It may be worth talking to a doctor about it. It is annoying and gross but our bodies don't stay young forever. After 25 we have to really watch our health. I started getting varicose veins when I was 24.

Weight has nothing to do with varicose veins. They are usually due to blocked deep veins or incompetent vein valves. There is not much that can help prevent varicose veins, except wearing a support like crepe bandage or may be 'panty hose'?
Some drugs like dobesilate may help.

Varicose veins are left alone, unless they become a severe problem.
You can wear support stockings.
Surgeons can strip the veins, if nothing else works.
