1 - 3 < 3+z-3 < 6-3
-2 < z < 3

you create two Inequalities out of one:

(1) 3 + z > 1
(2) 3 + z < 6

(1) z > 1 - 3
(2) z < 6 - 3

(1) z > -2
(2) z < 3

the answer is:
-2 < z < 3

It's easier if you just separate them into two different problems to solve...
1<3+z and 3+z<6
-2 then you just combine them again and get
-2
