It is pretty much the case that Mensa people don't converse with strangers very long before they let them know that they belong. One joins an exclusive group in order to be exclusive, and to be exclusive in the matter of intelligence must be very comforting.

Though I.Q. tests certainly are an index to ability and career success, an awful lot of Mensa people lead very ordinary lives and follow very pedestrian occupations. In 1960, the highest recorded I.Q. in the nation belonged to a Houston motorcycle cop, and second or third was a New York city cabby. But many members are distinguished men and women.

I have three times had it confirmed to me that my I.Q. was in the upper 130's, but when I have seen examples of the Mensa exam questions, I have never been able to answer a single one. On the other hand, the undergrad degree took only three years, and the Ph.D. dis was finished in three months and was published. Different exams, different outcomes.

But let me caution you: don't ever tell a Mensa member that membership is not a significant matter.

I'm sure there are some in MENSA who feel superior to others. This is to be expected but those people don't understand what an IQ test really is: an imperfect tool used to analyze your ability to logically reason through a problem/situation. If you do not think in a straight line, you're not going to do well. If you've taken an IQ test prior to the MENSA test, chances are very good that you're going to score higher than a person who hasn't. There are so many variables in the equation that they don't take into account that you just can't take the scores with more than a grain of salt. My results are in the high 140's but what does that really mean? Nothing.

I qualify for MENSA, but I won't join. There are many different types of intelligence. MENSA members are intelligent in some areas and stupid in others.

I joined once, but let my membership lapse. I didn't get anything out of it, got tired of sending them money.

All MENSA membership proves is that you're good at taking IQ tests. It won't make you rich or famous, and it doesn't impress members of the opposite sex. There are just as many, if not more, crazies in MENSA than there are outside of it.

I am technically entitled to MENSA membership-but I won't join because I know for sure there are smarter people than me out there with lower IQ's. IQ is becoming an outmoded judge of intelligence.

Yes, I think a lot of them do feel superior and as far as IQ's go, I guess they are. I have one friend who bothered to take and pass the test and he'll tell you he's the dumbest smartass you'll ever know. He's smart regarding math but can't pass college level English. I have a high IQ but I don't think that makes me better than anyone. It just means, if I actually applied myself, I might have an easier time in certain fields of study.

I qualify as well, just like Sally, but I haven't bothered with it yet. I just don't want to drive to Stamford, CT from New Haven for the test ;)

To me, it's really just another place to talk to people. Other than that, I don't think it has that much significance. Meh.
