Of course you CAN! But the question is, do you have a chance of getting cast? That depends on the director...Some directors are very strict about honoring the script and the intention of the playwright. One of the shows I auditioned for (The Nerd) I LOVED the character of Axel (typically male), but i familiarized myself with the script, and found no reason why the character couldn't be female. I discussed with the director ahead of time, the effects of having Axel played by a female would be, and I pointed out the pros of doing so. If you have that opportunity, I would definately do that! It not only showed him I was SERIOUS about the role, but also made him reconsider his original vision--and I got the part!

I would hope so. I love the Tempest and have considered reversing the sex on all the roles.
