I believe that there is no "true" purpose of life or existence. But that doesn't mean you can't live a fulfilling, happy life. It's up to you to follow your dreams and passions. In other words, you have to create your own purpose.

This is an extremely serious matter. Our human nature cannot deal with a meaningless existence because a meaningless existence is the same as a worthless existence.
"There is only one really serious philosophical question, and that is suicide. Deciding whether or not life is worth living is to answer the fundamental question in philosophy. All other questions follow from that." Camus (noted 20th century philosopher and author)
Suicide is the natural consequence of deciding that our lives are not worth living.
Our lives are indeed meaningless and purposeless unless there is a Creator.
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell
Russell was a noted 20th century mathematician, philosopher and Nobel Laureate. He was also an atheist but he was honest enough to understand that we live a purposeless existence if we are without God.
We either seek God or seek ways to avoid thinking about a meaningless existence.
This idea of avoiding thinking about a meaningless existence is exemplified in answer 1: "life is what you make of it". Here the answerer invites you to invent something and then delude yourself into believing that your invention is the meaning for your life.

My belief is that we were created to worship God. Yes, I believe that serving God through helping others is the way to finding joy and satisfaction in life. Every culture in the world has developed a religion. Why? Because we all know in our hearts that there is something more, but we can't quite put our fingers on it. Our life isn't a race to death, it's a search for more life, for God! Peace, truth, beauty, meaning and a reason to live; all linked to perspective and knowing God.
The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patients, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self control. Knowing good from bad and right from wrong started somewhere; we didn't just make it up! I don't believe in evolution because it shows that life is just a race to death; grow, breed and die, grow, breed and die. We aren't animals, we are humans with a soul given to us by God, and this soul never dies as our body does.
Everyone looks for a reason to live, and it grieves me to think of all the people on their deathbeds still wondering what the meaning of life is. I think looking into Christianity and serving God is worth doing, don't you? Otherwise, life is just a big circle; we get nowhere.
Truth isn't what you make it; there is a definite truth that we all know in our hearts. All of us can understand that there is a right and a wrong, although many of us tend to smother it.
I'm not trying to preach to anyone; just look into the meaning of life. Questions like the meaning of life disturb the soul because it they are related to the soul. Life is full of pain, suffering and emotions, and I believe that it just isn't worth living unless you have a purpose.

life is what you make of it
each person has different criteria. For many people their goal is happiness. Also for many it makes them happy to see that they have made a difference in the world and made it a better place.
Some people, you may think, do not think this way. For example, Hitler. But, in his own twisted way, he did think that he was making the world a better place with what he was doing.
You daughter's response was wise, yet untrue. Just because we are going to die, doesnt mean we should f*ck around out whole lives and d whatever we want, because then we wont be happy.
Think about when you are old and retired, and look back on your life... will you be happy with it? Whatever you can imagine being happy with at that point, plan for it now.
You are right in saying do your work, because it will matter to her later. She may not want to do her work now, and may decide not to on her own later, but the only way to parent well is to push your kids in the right direction.
In today's world an education is the reliable key to money and happiness. There are ways you can do it without.. for example great business ideas, or professional sports etc. But those are not reliable. Whether thats good or not, thats how it goes.
If you want to provide your daughter with a reliable way to be happy and safe, and education is the way to go.

to have a fullfilled life you need to make somthing of yourself. you can just live in emptyness saying: well im gonna die one day so F*** it. but thats just another wasted life.
by putting yourself in a higher position (job) and finding "the love of your life" you can have a much happier and fullfilled life.
basically there are two choices. 1. live to die AND 2. live to the full.
choice is yours.
