or manga?

Yes, yes, I Know there're exceptions, but generally all *my* eyes see are the same small noses, enormous eyes, multi-colored, big spiky hair & impossible anatomies.

Not to mention crappy animation. Herky jerky movement & cheap fx. (like for ex., when someone is descending quickly from above, you just see the *background* whizzing by)

Again, I know there're excpetions. I've seen a few, but man...the rest I just don't get it....

I was tempted to put this on the cartoon board. Man, the anime fans there would chew this thread up! lol

But I would like to hear them defend it. ...cause I don't get it.

Give me the old Bugs Bunny & Looney Tunes. They moved nicely & were actually funny. Still are.

Once again, ditto Fonz. In my eyes, almost every anime character I've ever seen looks like this:

& a couple of my friends are like amazed by it. I'm mystified.

Well, I am a huge anime fan...so it would be easy for me to take the defensive on this one. But I won't.

Anime or Japanese animation is very different from American animation, in many ways. Obviously there are cultural differences, but most of all there are some very different artistic techniques used in anime than US animation. Here’s where the "small noses, enormous eyes, multi-colored, big spiky hair & impossible anatomies" come into play. I’m sure you are just used to the styles and techniques that classic American comics and cartoons have, such as: four fingered hands, big noses, large feet, and even at times (again) impossible anatomies...which is fine, most people that aren't asian are.

The examples of anime in your question including your "crappy animation" comment are common misconceptions with anime. Older pre CG style anime has some similar characteristics to those you mentioned.(ie. Speed Racer, Astro Boy, Gigantor, the original DragonBall) I'll admit there is a lot of newer anime that I don't like either, but there is a whole new generation of artistically amazing, very well written, (even English dubbed) anime out there now as well.

For example, check out any of the following:

Trinity Blood
Blood Plus
Samurai Champloo
Big O
Rurouni Kenshin
Witch Hunter Robin
Wolf's Rain
Trigun
Death Note
Bleach
Ghost In The Shell
The Full Metal Alchemist

These are just some of my favorites, there are endless others. If you chose to have an open mind, and actually watch any of these, they may change your perception of anime...or not. Anime on average is much more serious than American animation, and some people just don’t like serious cartoons…if Bugs Bunny & Looney Tunes is more to your liking, that’s cool too. Not everyone has the same tastes.

I've never really gotten into the cartoons, especially because I don't much like reading subtitles. But I have heard of previewed some that did sound like they had very engaging storylines. And I've always been a little sympathetic with the anime lovers because I love (really really really really love) the Final Fantasy franchise which you can tell has very obvious anime influence, and if I got the chance I probably wouldn't mind watching the animes related to the series, especially te FFVII ones.

But I've never been interested enough to watch a cartoon series or rent a movie, although I wouldn't completely rule it out. And in reference to your other question, I'd much rather have a child that was interested in anime than Bratz dolls! It could always be worse.

My Anime taste goes as far as "Speed Racer" (go Speed Racer Goooo) after that I am a fan of the classic which you can't find on TV these days, boy Saturday morning cartoons just do not cut it anymore. Also with the Anime, I can't figure out why there are whole sections in book stores just for it? ps I am not a big fan of Speed Racer, it is just something from my youth, was "Giagantor" anime also?

My friends are all crazy about anime, they dressed up as people from anime for Halloween..... lets just say they could never get the anatomy right....
They're all addicted and all I see is cheesy stroylines and I'm not even kidding when I say it's cartoon porn, it gets pretty graphic. But they're all addicted so i just have to suck it up while they go into the anime store.

I'm with you on this one Fonzie :)

Of the few I've seen, they all look like exactly the same cartoon, just re-edited!

But I suppose their biggest fan base is youngish children, and how many cartoons did we watch at that age which now look awful when scrutinized with adult eyes?

What I can't understand is the college-age fans!

Some have excellent animation. But i know what you mean, European looking characters, women are incredibly beautiful, and the male characters don't seem to notice them. mouths never move. It is great when done well , crappy when it's not.

Yes, I am also at a loss as to why people are so obsessed with that genre. It's idiotic.
