He was obviously guilty, due to the facts that he was instinctively brutal and alcoholic. His actions, which he calls "little household occurences" are actually violent, murderous acts. We can find this attitude at the end of the story. His shirt was mutilated when the cops came to his house for investigation. The humans' brutal instinct could also be ironic. Also, in "The Black Cat," Poe uses symbolism to show human brutality. The black cat has always been a symbol of bad luck. The first black cat was named Pluto, which was also the name of the King of the Underworld and the dead in Roman mythology. Thus, Pluto the cat, and, generally, all black cats, symbolize death to the narrator and Pluto, the cat, symbolizes his brutal mind. The Black Cat (underlined) is Poe's "psychological study of domestic violence and guilt." His use of techniques, such as foreshadowment, irony, and symbolism makes a great work that accurately describes human brutality.
