To enable a laptop to use wifi, you do need to install a wireless network adapter. Most new laptops come with one already onboard, but you can purchase external ones (PCMCIA cards or USB type adapters) for older laptops.

Wherever you plan to use the laptop wirelessly, you need to have access to a wireless router, which is what your laptop's adapter interfaces with to get internet access.

You might want to visit the site below for some tutorials and helpful info on how wireless works.

A USB wireless adapter will allow you to connect to an existing wifi hotspot. If you are not within range of a hotspot you will also need a broadband internet connection AND a wireless router.

The wireless router plugs into your broadband modem and communicates wirelessly with your laptop.

The wireless router can also accept up to 4 wired PCs to share the same internet connection.

You need to password protect your router to stop other users "piggy-backing" onto your wifi hotspot.

You need an Internet connection, Modem, Router and a USB Wireless adapter for your Desktop.
I recommend Linksys components.

most laptops come with built-in wi-fi hardware these days. For a laptop that doesn't have one, there is cards you can plug into your computer and USB wi-fi adapters. If you are going to buy a new adapter and want to be on top of the newest technology, try to get a card that supports 802.11n. If you don't want to spend the extra money, almost all other adapters should have at least 802.11g which is the fastest current standard under it.

Adapters come in a few flavors: USB, PCMCIA, CardBus, probably Firewire somewhere. They are all, relatively, the same. Most people use a USB wireless adapter that I'm aware of.

You need a wireless adapter. They have some that you can just plug into the usb port on your laptop. Those are easier. But then there are also cards that you install. They work much better.

Here are links to what you need on WalMart.com. (Most people use Linksys, in the blue box.)

Here are the cards

Here are the USB adapters:

Hope this helps!
