I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/... On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

If Norton has not failed you then I would suggest you stick with it and update it to the new Norton 360 to ensure that you have a complete suite (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc)..
I would also make sure you go thru each of the preferences to ensure it is properly configured.
Then keep it updated with vigilance.
Asking people on a web board probably isn't the way to go as you will find many people trying to get you to install freeware and who are biased and who are certainly not professionals in so doing. No professional, regardless of their opinion, would badmouth a product that is clearly viable. They certainly wouldn't use words like "suck", etc...
If you don't like Norton then I would recommend McAfee. I have used it for years without problems and most of the companies I have consulted for use one or the other with much success.
Whatever you choose... get protected asap.
Good Luck

I am a beta tester for antivirus/antispyware in my free time. Nortons is the abolsute worse. Resource hog and never finds any viruses. If one is found does not kill the entire virus. Plus you will have a very hard time removing, from add/remove, as Nortons leaves over 375 fragments in your system, glued to your registry, files, folders and subsystem.
This can cause conflict with your system. You really have to get all the fragments out if possible. (You can ctc., me for a free software tool that will delete all write protected files).
I have used for ten plus years, a program called Twister Trojan Antivirus, used by the Govt. Of China. You only pay a one time fee for life. Includes all auto. daily updates and all new versions for life. Price is $29.99 Never had one virus as included is a real time background scanner that will kill in a split second any trojan embedded in a webpage that you may open, or kill any file of any kind, zip etc. in real time if there is a virus hidden in the file.
Techical Details:
It can detect and remove Trojan horses, Spyware, Viruses, Hackers, Adware, Keyloggers and other harmware. The advanced harmful-websites detection technology can block most web-viruses and script-viruses. Realtime protection will automatically monitor every file access against the trojans, spyware and viruses threats. Virus definition update and automatic update supported. Windows Security Center supported. Supports right-click scan from Windows Explorer context menu. Supports compressed files scan. Registry realtime protection will block and fix the harmware to vandalize your Windows registry. Registry Fix Tools can quickly fix a lot of problems about Windows and Internet Explorer. Spyware Removal Assistant can force clean the stubborn trojans and spyware that the other removal tools cannot. The Behavior Analysis Technology can detect the unknown trojans and spyware better. The Windows Trust Verification can raise the anti-rate and reduce the mis-rate. The virus immunity feature can anti-unknown viruses like as biological immunity technology. The scheduled scan supports automatic scan at specified time. Lowest CPU usage rate, best performance
http://www.filseclab.com (You can evaluate for thirty days free with a key that they developers will give you). After thirty days you must purchase. Support is direct from the developers in Beijing, China where the company is located.

I had Norton, but it is a big computer hog and slows the computer down quite a bit. I also hate paying for it. Where I work my "IT Guy" highly recommends Avast. It is free and works just as well as Norton. I have it installed on my Father-In-Laws computer and my Mom's computer and it works great. I use the anti-virus program that comes free with my Charter subscription.

There are many free ones out there such as AVG or Avast. If you are going to pay for one I feel you should consider Bitdefender Total Security 2008

My 2 computers have run great since switching about 3 months ago.

Norton is crap. I've looked around a lot, and kaspersky is pretty well regarded. G-data, a german company, makes one with kaspersky and another combined, which is probably hard to beat. I use that one. Yes, they make it in english!
