Oh, women played MANY roles in WWII.

For example, my mother was the FIRST female network news broadcast anchor (just radio in those days) thanks to the war. She anchored the noon news on Mutual Radio's "Blue Network" starting in 1942.

But that is not an important example, except to our family.

Women ferried bombers and fighters to the battle fronts from American factories. They served both ashore and at sea in the Navy. They made EVERYTHING from rifles and cannon shells to ships and shoes. In fact, women were especially valued in the metal machi9ning line for artillery shells because they were considered more steady, reliable workers. In Russia, the factories would have completely closed down were it not for the larbor of women.

And the Russian armed forces used MANY women on the front lines - there was a very famous "Stormovik" pilot named Ludmilla who racked up an impressive list of victories and performed many heroic feats.

Women sat in their many hundreds in the offices of the new Pentagon in Washington, D.C., typing orders, supply requisitions, and notices to families of the wounds or deaths of combat troops. The early scenes of "Saving Private Ryan" show this well.

Women organized bond drives, entertainment events, collections of clothing and goods for combat troops, and service programs of every kind on the "home front." Going back for a moment to my mother, she held a dying serviceman's head in her lap after a terrible auto accident outside the entrance to Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Only a short time before, she had been dancing with that young man at a USO event.

Sometimes, as wives and support for men working at home on the war effort, women also gained respect and appreciation for their efforts. It was common practice at shipyards to invite the wives of shipyard workers to launch new Liberty ships.

There are several wonderful books on this topic. I hope I have tickled your imagination about things to look up.

In different countries they were involved to different levels.
For example the Soviet Union had females in a combat role - infantry and combat pilots.
The UK had women as Anti-Aircraft spotters, and in the opeational planning departments
Other answers here give good descriptions of womens roles in industry, also consider the farming aspect.
Women also were highly involved in the nursing side, sometimes in very dangerous situations.
A key point would be that the War provided an oppurtunity for women to show that they could do pretty much anything men could, and after the war equality for the sexes was increasingly called for.

They basically ran all the companies and even had a baseball league to replace the men that were gone!!

The baseball team they made a movie about years ago. It was good.

Many woman worked in plants and factoried producing the war materials to keep their husbands and loved ones safe. It was their way of contributing from home.

SOME joined the military but were never allowed combat action but were still very usefull regardless this foresigth. Woman were a very essential role in allowing men to be freed so we could fight a two front war and win, something no nation had done very well yet.
