Life doesn't grow bitter. People grow bitter.

Often this occurs due to disappointment after disappointment (especially in relationships). You really need to work on trying to put things behind you. The past can't be changed but the way you think about it (or the need to think about it at all) can be.

On occasion I look back at certain events in my life and think "if only..." Once I catch myself doing that I immediately try to focus on something else because I know it can't be changed and obsessing about it simply isn't good for me.

This doesn't mean you should forget about past events - you should always try to remember and learn from them. But you should understand they were way stops in your journey called life rather than the desitnation of that journey.

Because it loses its shine as you grow up and learn more.

What are the things that shine in the beginning?
1. Love and marraige. Obviously some of those do not go stale but a good percentage go belly up after the years go by.

2. A new toy. Then you want replacement

3. A new car. Then its too old and you want a new model

4. House, dress, shoes, it is a material world

5. Relationships. Parent-child, boyfriend-girlfriend, best friends, We may grow apart in many aspects.

Cest la vie. Such is life.

I think bitterness comes from looking backward, I used to be able to run so fast jump so high, I had this much more hair, I used to be so many pounds skinnier.

Their is no yesterday to go back to, only a today and possibly a tomorrow. Make the best of those.

Guess it depends on what you choose to focus on. Life doesn't turn out the way you expect, not exactly, no matter what you expect. If you focus on disappointments and see aging as diminishing choices/prospects, this can lead to bitterness, especially if you haven't spent your life making the kind of memories you can look back on with fondness.

Someone once said "There are two responses to life. One is to laugh, the other to cry. I prefer laughter, because there's less cleaning up to do afterward."

If you focus on the bad things, then yeah, life will suck. Focus on the good things, because they're out there, and they're real and good and all that Hallmark junk. Stop being whiny. We all have problems, but we just have to get over them.

It becomes bitter when you let the bad things get to you.
