I have traveled alone since my early 20s, quite often in France (and I do not speak French.)

You can look for the nearest town that has a youth hostel, either from Hosteling International or an independent hostel.

Once you know when you will be in the area you can write your relatives that you will be in town on these dates. (e-mail if you want to see them, so you have time to change your plans if needed.)

If you travel with other people you will have a good excuse not to stay with the relatives.

If you want to travel a lot in France, think about getting a train pass, for a week or two of unlimited traveling, or a young persons reduction pass if you stay in France longer.

If you are not sure about traveling alone, you can also combine a short visit with your relatives with a bus tour or other group travel.
Go to your local travel agent to see the ready made travels, or search internet.

I like traveling in France and traveling alone, but the first few times it was a bit hard to get used to.
If you are into church, maybe this place is something for you:

I have been there several times and found it a very good place to meet people, but it is all about religion.

You can join some club and let them pick up the travelling expenses for promoting their club! Me, Myself and I, hate to travel it's a real pain except for a short travel on the greyhound bus to the neighbouring town for a visit!
