Especially in Homeric times and his role in The Trojan War. He interests me, but I can't figure out what he stands for.

He is the perfect Greek, he symbolizes everything that the Greeks hold as ideal. He is cunning, brave in battle, and (trying to be) a devoted family man.

Odysseus symbolises 3 things:
1. he is ingenius, will use his brain to achieve what he needs.
2. he has a passion for knowledge, for travel, he is restless
3. he has the desire for his home.

like classic major said, he was everything the greeks aspired to be-- thus, a greek hero. he was favored by the gods, cunning, crafty, strong, and loyal.
