Okay, so I am in my Sophomore year of college, and I am going to major in something business related: finance, accounting, management, marketing...but I am still undecided. I think I want to major in something concrete, like finance or accounting, because I hear that the pay is better starting out, but I would really like to get some peoples opinions. That's where you come in! A note is that I want to own my own business one day.

Thanks!

There is more demand for accounting and finance jobs than for other areas. I personally don't think accounting is interesting, and find finance fascinating. But I also understand that many people think just the opposite.

Why not take a few classes in each area and then decide what you like?

Don't base your decisions on starting salary alone. Many people who do that are miserable. However, by now you have probably taken at least an accounting course. Did you find it interesting? If so, then that might be an area you want to consider. If not, do you prefer the money side of business to the people side? That is really the difference. If you like business because you are fascinated by money, then finance or accounting will be appropriate. If you like business because you enjoy dealing with people, management and marketing make more sense. Wanting to have your own business is great, but you can do that from any perspective. If you don't have a burning desire to be an entrepreneur right now, get good overall skills and some work experience in a field that interests you.

Starting pay is not the main consideration.

Whatever career you choose, you will be doing 40 (or more) hours per week for many years (up to 45 years). What field will you enjoy the most?

Certainly jobs in finance and accounting are readily available but I know people who took those paths and were bored to tears, and ended up going back to school to get another degree.

Do what you will enjoy the most as a career. Don't worry too much about pay unless the pay differences are huge, and in these fields, they are not that huge.

Right now, accounting is a great career if you like doing it. That may change in the future as more and more people in India learn accounting and people start emailing work over there to get done.

the stable company majors are finance, economics and accounting. those have a pair problematical math courses yet my daughter have been given by them and additionally you would be able too. She took economics. English and historic previous majors do no longer bring about nicely paying jobs.
